The UAE 180-day rule: how long you can be away before losing residency
A UAE residence visa is nullified automatically after more than 180 continuous days outside the country. No notice, no decision to appeal. Here is how to count it.
Most day-counting is about how long you may stay. This one is the reverse: how long you may be away.
A UAE residence visa is nullified automatically once the holder has been outside the country for more than 180 continuous days. There is no notice and no decision to appeal — the permission simply stops existing, and people discover it at an airport.
Where the boundary sits
The rule says more than 180 days. So:
- An absence of exactly 180 days is still within the rule.
- Day 181 is not.
Off by one here costs someone their residency, so it is worth being precise.
A worked example
You leave the UAE on 1 August 2026.
- Count forward 180 days: your last permitted re-entry is 28 January 2027.
- Return on 28 January and you are fine.
- Return on 29 January and the visa is already void.
As at 6 September 2026 you would be 36 days out, with 144 days remaining.

Who is exempt
Not everyone is subject to it. Exempt categories include golden visa holders, people on diplomatic assignment, and those receiving approved medical treatment.
The golden visa is the notable one: holders may stay outside the UAE for longer than the six months that would otherwise be needed to keep a residence visa valid. If you hold one, this rule is not your rule — but confirm your category with the immigration authority rather than assuming.
What happens if you overstay inside the country

Briefly: after a residence permit expires or is cancelled, grace periods reach up to six months depending on the resident category. That is a range and a category test, not a number anyone can apply to a stranger, so DAYOZA does not apply one for you.
