Common questions
Do the entry and exit days both count?
Yes. Under Article 6(2) of the Schengen Borders Code, the date of entry counts as the first day of stay and the date of exit as the last day of stay. A trip that arrives and leaves on the same day counts as one day.
Is the 90 days per country or across the whole area?
Across the whole Schengen area. Days spent in France, Germany and Spain all draw on the same 90-day allowance.
Does the allowance reset after 180 days?
No. The window rolls forward one day at a time, so days drop out of the count individually as they pass out of the 180-day period. There is no single reset date.
Does this apply to my residence permit or long-stay visa?
No. The 90/180 rule covers short stays. National long-stay visas and residence permits are governed by separate rules, which this calculator does not cover.
